By Reeva at 2009-12-17 03:51:34
Gout is known as "aadya-Vaat" as per Ayurveda. It is a disease of the affluent and rich people. There are many simple home remedies for gout which can help to ease the pain like applying ice on the inflamed toe or joint, eating cherries, avoiding pulses, cereals or high protein diet, but one of the most important thing is cleansing the blood and correcting the disturbed purine - pyrimidine metabolism. The proteins which are processed in the liver are not correctly processed thereby leaving the intermediate metabolites causing increase in uric acid levels. This increased uric acid crystalizes around various joints especially the toe joint and causes pain and inflammation.

The best brains of ancient ayurvedic physicians of Kerala, guided by their experience, evolved a few unique methods of treatment to improve the healthcare system. Their prime aim was to make the ayurvedic treatment less expensive and accessible to common man without losing its efficacy. They are very keen to adhere to the fundamental therapeutic approach of ayurveda while designing the treatment profiles. Salubrious climate of Kerala, abundant availability of resources required for treatment, deep knowledge - base of traditional medical fraternity including Ashtavaidyas and the scientific temper they maintained in practice set a congenial background for the development of medical science. Social and environmental atmosphere that prevailed in Kerala also contributed largely.

For recurrent sinusitis, Ayurvedic compounds like Laghu Malini Vasant, Madhu Malini Vasant and Suvarna Malini Vasant are used along with Pippali (Piper longum). A special preparation called Chausashtha Pippali is used in a gradually increasing dose, followed by a gradually decreasing dose. Sometimes, several courses of these medicines are required.A daily process of applying medicated nasal drops such as Anu oil or Panchendriya vardhan oil (known as "Pratimarsha Nasya") is believed to prevent frequent occurrence of sinusitis. In addition, breathing exercises like Yogic Pranayam, and special procedures like the Yogic Neti, are also very useful. It is advisable to avoid known aggravating factors.

The Ayurvedic treatment of lupus depends upon the presentation of symptoms and the involvement of different systems and organs. This being an autoimmune disease, first and foremost, it is important to try and restore the immune function of the body. Immunomodulatory treatment can be given using medicines like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Pippali (Piper longum), Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata) and Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia).

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an acquired syndrome characterized by intravascular activation of coagulation with loss of localization arising from different causes. It can originate from and cause damage to the micro-vasculature, which if sufficiently severe, can produce organ dysfunction. DIC is not an independent illness but rather a complication or an effect of progression of other illnesses. DIC is most commonly observed in severe sepsis, septic shock, trauma, malignancy, organ destruction, severe transfusion reactions, rheumatological illnesses, obstetric complications, vascular abnormalities, severe liver failure and severe toxic reactions. DIC can be either acute or chronic. Bleeding from multiple sites and multi-organ failure are typical symptoms of DIC.

Mitral valve regurgitation and aortic valve regurgitation are valvular heart diseases in which the mitral and aortic valves do not function efficiently, leading to backward flow of blood. Common symptoms for both conditions include breathlessness, fatigue, chest pain, cough and symptoms of right or left ventricular failure. Rheumatic heart disease is a common cause in developing countries whereas mitral valve prolapse and aortic valve prolapse, resulting from myxomatous degeneration, are common causes of these two conditions respectively in developed countries. Coronary artery disease resulting in myocardial ischemia or myocardial infarction can also result in valvular regurgitation.
